Meagan is an AHPRA registered physiotherapist with over 24 years’ experience with humans, and over 8 years with non human animals. She holds qualifications in both human and animal physiotherapy, and is immediate past National Chair of the Australian Physiotherapy Association’s Animal Physio Group. Vegan for over 15 years, she is passionate about helping animals of all species receive the best allied health care to nurture wellness to live their best lives.

With a deep respect for the body’s innate ability to heal and know what it needs to facilitate healing, Meagan is primarily a manual therapist. Her approach is scientific in it’s enquiry to ascertain and address the cause of dysfunction, rather than just treat or ‘manage’ symptoms.

Meagan assesses all soft tissue systems, identifies what is dysfunctional and in what way, and treats using targeted techniques for each dysfunction. She works with whole body systems and prefers techniques that are gentle and indirect like craniosacral and counterstrain, but has all of the traditional techniques, including massage, mobilisations, splinting, taping, laser, electrical stimulation, ultrasound etc if needed.

Treatment is complemented with a targeted,  progressed home program to facilitate functional change in the body.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle manual technique. Connection to tissue is made through light pressure. The practitioner follows the tissue into off stretch until it softens and releases, and works where your body tells them the cause of the dysfunction is, rather than only where the symptoms are. Craniosacral therapy respects the connectedness of the whole body, including the physical, emotional and spirit.

There is no need for skin contact. To get the best result it's important to be as comfortable as possible and somewhat still.

The body will process the tissue changes made in treatment for up to 3 days, so it's best to be able to take it easy immediately following treatment.

Pulsed Laser

Therapeutic laser (photobiomodulation) is an excellent tool to stimulate healing and tissue change.  Light energy puts energy into the mitochondria of cells.

Meagan uses a Scalar laser. It's a low power pulsed laser, so it doesn't heat the tissue, but it takes longer to give the dose. It has different settings for different combinations of the three different wavelengths.

There are a few contraindications and precautions for laser use, including in bodies with cancer or with active growth plates (eg, puppies, children).

Counterstrain

Counterstrain is a manual technique that positions tissue into off stretch to facilitate quick release and return to normal tone (how it is engagement by the nervous system).

It works with the interconnectedness of the whole body, changing deep tissue through the nervous system to return to good function.

Kinesiology Taping

Kinesio taping lifts the skin and fascia by 3-5mm (evidenced with humans with diagnostic ultrasound- it would be less with non human animals depending on the length of hair).

It is a great tool to use between treatments to help improve swelling and tissue that is not engaging well. If there is no skin reaction it can stay on for 4-5 days.

Multidisciplinary Team

Meagan enjoys working as a part of a multidisciplinary team when appropriate. Depending on what is going on in the body, she may recommend an appointment with a:

  • veterinarian/doctor

  • acupuncturist

  • homeopath

  • naturopath

  • dog trainer/behaviourist

Similar to water exercise for humans, a good tool for gait re-education for dogs is a water treadmill. To be most effective it requires an operator who is in the water with hands on to facilitate normal movement patterns.

To help with balancing the neurological system and developing good neural pathways, yin yoga is a beautiful practice for humans, and noseworks/scent work is awesome for dogs.
